The Bayonne Basque Museumis dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Basque culture. It offers visitors a captivating insight into the traditions, crafts, language and history of our community.
Then continue your immersion with a visit to an Etxe (house in Basque). La Basque House Ortillopitz is a living testimony to traditional Basque architecture. Built in the 17th century, it has been carefully preserved to offer visitors a true immersion in the past. In the Basque Country, a house is more than a piece of property or architecture: it’s a memory and a history.
For a change of scenery, head to Château Abbadia Observatory an architectural and scientific gem, with a breathtaking view of the ocean and a fascinating history of astronomy. Built in the 19th century by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc for scientist Antoine d’Abbadie and his wife, Château Abbadia is a unique example of neo-Gothic architecture. It also houses an astronomical observatory that has played an important role in the study of the night sky.

The Makhila workshop in Larressore
L ‘Atelier du Makhila perpetuates the age-old skill of making Basque walking sticks, known as “Makila”. Each piece is the fruit of meticulous craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation. Today, the seventh generation of the Ainciart Bergara family is at the helm!

This workshop embodies the soul of glass craftsmanship. Alexandre’s imagination and precision combine to create unique pieces of creativity and craftsmanship that capture the light and the imagination.
Exhibition venues
Rain can be an excellent opportunity to discover the cultural treasures of the Basque Country.
Start your discovery at the espace culturel Assantza in Cambo-les-Bains, which offers permanent and temporary exhibitions. Among the permanent exhibitions, one is dedicated to the painter Pablo Tillac and the second to the sculptor Jesus Echeverria, two artists who lived in Cambo.
Then on to the Ospitalea d’Irissarry commandery Founded by the Order of Malta, it has now been converted into the Centre départemental d’éducation au patrimoine. Here, you can discover local heritage and culture through events and exhibitions.
Finally, we’re off to Didam in Bayonne a contemporary art space featuring exhibitions by regional artists and big names in national and international photography.
