Discover how this emblematic Basque stick is handcrafted, a tradition maintained by this family for over 7 generations.

The makhila is a witness to the history of the Basque Country. Today, both a walking stick and an art object, the makhila is an honorary emblem handed down from generation to generation.

Each makhila is custom-made from loquat wood over 20 years in the making, and adorned with hand-decorated ferrules using a variety of techniques (guilloché, punching, file work and chisel engraving).

10:00 : coffee reception at Ferme Agerria in Saint Martin d’Arberoue, a family farm where Bernadette, Jean-Claude and their daughter Maitena raise dairy sheep. They produce and mature the cheese in compliance with the PDO Ossau-Iraty raw milk specifications. They also raise free-range Pie Noir pigs from the Basque Country.

For the past twenty years, they have been opening the doors of their farms to the public to share their knowledge and know-how, and have been awarded the Bienvenue à la ferme label.

Guided walking tour of La Bastide-Clairence, a Gascon and Navarrese bastide listed as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”.

You’ll discover the heritage of this arts and crafts village, which has retained the structure of the bastides of the southwest: its Basque architecture, its church and cemetery paved with flagstones (unique in the northern Basque country), its Jewish cemetery, and its central rectangular square, Place des Arceaux.

The Bastide-Clairence trinquet is the oldest in France. The wood of its beams has been dated to 1512. In fact, it has the rare distinction of being a former jeu de paume converted into a trinquet.

Welcome to Agerria Farm in Saint Martin d’Arberoue, a family farm where Bernadette, Jean-Claude and their daughter Maitena raise dairy sheep. They produce and mature the cheese in compliance with the PDO Ossau-Iraty raw milk specifications.
