Peaceful hiking

Discover the Basque mountains with a guide

Accompanied hiking offers a safer and more rewarding experience for hikers wishing to venture into the mountains.

Local guides have in-depth knowledge of the area, its flora and fauna, and its history, complementing the experience with interesting information and anecdotes. The Cambo-les-Bains tourist office is therefore working in collaboration with the Mendi Gaiak guide bureau to offer several different hikes.

On the trail of the vultures

To observe vultures in their natural habitat, head for Basse-Navarre, to Saint-Martin d’Arrosa, 20 minutes from Cambo-les-Bains.

On a tour rich in discovery and emotion, our guide takes you to meet the king bird of our mountains, and shares with you all the secrets of the Basque mountains, their flora and fauna.

You’ll venture up close to the griffon vultures’ niches to observe them through binoculars, and feel the power of these magnificent gliders that defy the winds with their 2.80 m wingspan as they fly overhead.

Although they are the main protagonists of this excursion, the vultures are not the only point of interest. The summit of Larla and the paths you’ll follow are packed with relics of the area’s industrial past! And yes, this summit does indeed conceal a former mining and metallurgical site, which explains the mine entrances, buildings and installations, as well as the rolling track you’ll see on your hike!

Along the way, you’re sure to come across the inhabitants of our mountains: birds of prey, ewes, vultures and pottoks, the little ancestral ponies typical of the region.

The aim here is not to achieve a sporting performance, but to take advantage of this privileged moment to discover the mountains in a different way. So take the time to stop and listen to Vivi, your guide, and enjoy his anecdotes. Immerse yourself in a journey punctuated bylocal stories and legends!

After the effort, the comfort! Once at the summit, share a picnic with the whole group, and at nightfall you’re off for a smuggler’s return!
