Abbadia, le Château-Observatoire
Located north of Hendaye on the Basque corniche, a park designed by landscape architect Eugène Buhler that ends at the cliffs and the ocean, a residence conceived as a scientific laboratory: here is Abbadia, the Château-Observatoire, built between 1864 and 1884 for Antoine d'Abbadie, ethnologist, astronomer, great traveler and ardent defender of Basque culture.
The master builder was Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, an architect whose work here is one of his rarest creations.
The neo-Gothic Abbadia, le Château Observatoire, reflects the orientalist passion of its owner.
